2026 – FEBRUARY BENCH JEWELER “NEWSLETTER”
🎄 Funny “Did You Know?” Facts About February….. 😊

– It’s the only month that can’t commit to a number of days. Make up your mind February.
– February has 28 days, 29 if it’s feeling extra.
– Valentine’s Day happens in February, which means love and chocolate are required by law.
– February is the month where gyms are still crowded… but noticeably less crowded than January.
– Groundhog Day exists solely so a rodent can predict the weather better than humans.
– February has more “national days” per day than actual days.
– It’s the only month where people proudly say, “Hey, at least it’s almost March.”
– Leap Day exists just to remind us that time is fake.
– February weather can include snow, rain, sunshine, and regret—all in one day.
– It’s the month most likely to make you check the calendar twice to see what day it actually is.
– February proves that quantity of days does not equal quality of weather.
– Presidents’ Day gives us a day off… but no one is exactly sure why.
– February is the official month of “Why is it still cold?”
– February ends so abruptly it feels like it was cut off mid-sentence
Things to Ponder….
- Take a cold-water plunge. The shock will reset your whole body and leave you feeling bright and refreshed. Alternatively, turn your water temperature right down just before you get out of the shower, for the same inspiring blast.
- Wake up determined! Go to bed satisfied!
- Visit a local independent store away from the jewelry business. It can be inspiring to witness entrepreneurs and business ventures in action and see how people have achieved their dreams. Plus, it’s always uplifting to support local.
February’s Topic…. Sitting All Day? How to Protect Your Back and Neck at a Desk or Jeweler’s Bench
Many jobs today—especially desk work and bench work like jewelry repair—require long hours of sitting, leaning forward, and focusing on fine detail. While the work may be precise, the toll it takes on your back and neck can add up quickly. The good news? With a few smart habits and small adjustments, you can significantly reduce pain and protect your spine for the long run.
1. Start with Smart Posture (Not Perfect Posture)
You don’t need to sit like a statue—but you do need support.
- Keep both feet flat on the floor or on a footrest
- Hips should be slightly higher than knees
- Sit back in your chair so your lower back is supported
- Relax your shoulders—don’t let them creep up toward your ears
For jewelers, avoid bending your neck forward for long stretches. Bring the work up to your eyes, not your head down to the work.
2. Adjust Your Workspace to Fit You
Poor setup causes more pain than most people realize.
For desk workers:
- Your monitor should be at eye level
- Keyboard and mouse should be close and at elbow height
- Forearms should rest lightly, not hover
For jewelers and bench workers:
- Use a height-adjustable bench or chair
- Consider magnification tools to reduce neck bending
- Pad hard bench edges to avoid shoulder tension
Small ergonomic changes can make a big difference by the end of the day.
3. Move More—Even in Small Ways
Your body isn’t designed to stay still for eight hours.
- Stand up or stretch every 30–60 minutes
- Roll your shoulders backward 10 times
- Gently turn your head side to side
- Do a quick walk, even if it’s just to the water cooler
Movement keeps muscles from stiffening and improves circulation—both critical for pain prevention.
4. Stretch What Tightens the Most
Certain muscles take the biggest hit during seated work.
Helpful daily stretches include:
- Neck side stretches (ear toward shoulder, gently)
- Chest opening stretches to counter forward hunching
- Seated spinal twists for the lower back
- Gentle back extensions after leaning forward
Just 3–5 minutes, a few times a day, can reduce end-of-day pain noticeably.
5. Strengthen Outside of Work
Stretching helps, but strength protects.
Focus on:
- Core muscles (abdominals and lower back)
- Upper back and shoulder muscles
- Hip muscles, which support the spine
Even light exercises—done consistently—help your body tolerate long workdays much better.
6. Use Pain Signals as Early Warnings
Pain is your body’s way of asking for change, not something to push through indefinitely.
- Address stiffness early before it becomes chronic
- Use heat or ice when needed
- Adjust posture or tools if pain keeps returning
Ignoring discomfort often leads to bigger problems later.
7. End the Day by “Undoing” the Workday
After hours of sitting and leaning forward, reverse the posture.
- Stand tall and stretch arms overhead
- Gently arch your back backward
- Take a short walk to reset your spine
This helps prevent stiffness from carrying into the next day.
The Bottom Line
Whether you’re at a desk or a jeweler’s bench, managing back and neck health comes down to support, movement, and consistency. You don’t need major changes—just better habits practiced daily. Your spine will thank you, and your workdays will feel far more comfortable.
